Our story

Support for the whole nurse.

Supporting mental health nurses beyond clinical education.

Why CALMN exists

Clinical skill is only part of the job.

A California where every nurse is empowered, valued, and never alone in their work.

CALMN was founded because psychiatric and mental health nurses need more than clinical training. Nurses need support for their own wellbeing, a clear understanding of their license and legal responsibilities, and practical ways to help families understand mental health care.

We build free, plain-language education and tools for California’s mental health nurses, and we work with partners who bring real expertise, not just a pitch. Our goal is to support the whole nurse: the care they give, the person they are, and the profession they navigate.

What we focus on

Three things clinical education leaves out.

Nurse wellbeing

Honest resources on burnout, stress, and the emotional realities of the work, because nurse wellness is patient safety.

Legal literacy

Plain-language guides to licensure, holds, documentation, and what to do if a complaint arrives, plus a list of California attorneys who defend nurses.

Family education

Practical ways for nurses to explain mental health care to patients’ families, and free public tools such as WhichDoor to help anyone find the right level of care.

How we work

Free for nurses. Independent by design.

CALMN’s educational resources are free to use. We are supported by sponsors, partners, and donations, and we hold ourselves to a simple rule: a partner should add value for nurses, not just buy a chance to present.

Sponsorship supports our work; it does not buy influence over our educational content. Every partnership is disclosed.
